Rostock: Coach Härtel uses Ukrainian Sikan from the start

Hansa Rostock Sport Football

For Danilo Sikan, the only Ukrainian player in German professional football, it was a moving but certainly not so easy moment. The minute's silence before the start of the second division game of his club Hansa Rostock against 1. FC Nürnberg (0:2) due to the events in his homeland should have strengthened Sikan's thoughts about the safety of his relatives in Schitomir.

"We spoke to him intensively again on Friday. I think it's best for him to distract himself, to do what he's really good at and what his passion is," reported Hansa coach Jens Härtel on NDR and Sikan left the decision to play against the club: "It helps him to ignore the situation a bit."

Sikan wanted to play and made his first start against Nürnberg. A week ago, the professional saved a point for Rostock with his goal as a substitute in the 1-1 draw at Darmstadt 98. Sikan was substituted against Nuremberg in the 66th minute of the game.

The Ukrainian international was only loaned out by Shakhtar Donetsk on January 31.

Champions League final changes venue due to war between Russia and Ukraine

Sport uefa football ucl move

The great decision of the Champions League will have new headquarters. The armed conflict between Russia and Ukraine has prompted UEFA to take the decision to relocate the final, initially scheduled to be held in St. Petersburg, Russia.

Thus, now the match in which the champion of the main continental competition in the world will be decided will be played in France, at the Stade de France. The match will be played as scheduled on Saturday, May 28 at 9pm local time.

It's not the first time the location has changed. Lisbon and Porto would host the last two editions, but on both occasions Istanbul was the chosen venue. The coronavirus pandemic prevented the decisive game from being held in the Turkish city, which will host the 2023 final.

"UEFA would like to express its thanks and appreciation to the President of the French Republic, Emmanuel Macron, for his personal support and commitment to bringing the most prestigious game in European club football to France at a time of unprecedented crisis. UEFA will support fully the efforts of various stakeholders to ensure the rescue of football players and their families in Ukraine who are facing horrific human suffering, destruction and displacement," the UEFA statement reads.

The UEFA Executive Committee has also decided that Russian and Ukrainian clubs, in addition to the national teams of these countries, which compete in UEFA competitions, must play their games as home teams in neutral stadiums.

Uefa moves Champions League final from St Petersburg to Paris

Football Sport Uefa Champion League UCL

(Reuters) - UEFA moved this season's Champions League final from St Petersburg to Paris following Russia's invasion of Ukraine, European football's governing body said in a statement on Friday.

UEFA also said that home games of Ukrainian and Russian clubs and teams competing in UEFA competitions would be played at neutral venues "until further notice".

Also read:

The governing body thanked French President Emmanuel Macron for his "personal support and commitment" in taking over the venue for the tournament's final.

It added that it would "fully support multi-stakeholder efforts to secure the rescue of football players and their families in Ukraine facing terrible human suffering, destruction and displacement."

The Champions League final was scheduled for Saint Petersburg's Zenit stadium on 28 May, with thousands of fans from across the continent waiting to see the game that is the biggest showcase for European club football.

Kremlin spokesman Dmitry Peskov told reporters on a conference call: "It is a pity that such a decision was taken. St. Petersburg could have provided all the favorable conditions for this football festival to take place."

UK Culture Secretary Nadine Dorries, responsible for sport, supported UEFA's decision.

"I welcome Uefa's decisive action to withdraw this year's Champions League final from St Petersburg," she said.

"Russia must not be allowed to exploit sporting and cultural events on the world stage to legitimize its unprovoked, premeditated and unnecessary attack against a sovereign democratic state."

Petersburg stadium is known as the Gazprom Stadium after a sponsorship deal with the Russian state energy company, which also sponsors the Champions League and Euro 2024, two tournaments promoted by UEFA.

The final move comes after calls from a group of European lawmakers who asked UEFA on Thursday to change the venue and stop considering Russian cities for major international football competitions.

Lawmakers also called on the entity to end Gazprom's sponsorship of the continent's elite club competition. However, Uefa's statement on Friday made no mention of Gazprom.

The 2023 Champions League final will be played in Istanbul, with Wembley in London hosting the following year and Munich's Allianz Arena hosting the final in 2025.

NBA: Theis scores another win with Boston

National basketball player Daniel Theis has found his way back to success with the Boston Celtics after the short break due to the Allstar Game and has clinched the next win. The NBA record champion won 129-106 at the Brooklyn Nets and appeared well recovered from the home loss to the Detroit Pistons.

Also read:

Theis, who returned to Boston two weeks ago in a trade with Dennis Schröder from the Houston Rockets, scored four points and two rebounds in six minutes. For the Celtics, who are well on course for the playoffs in sixth place in the east (35-26 wins), it was their tenth win in eleven games in the North American professional league.

The most successful pitcher against the Nets was Jayson Tatum with 30 points, Brooklyn's Seth Curry had 22 points. Theis had already played for the 17-time champion Boston from 2017 to 2021.

SSV Jahn Regensburg on the way down

After four games without a win, the SSV needs another win - preferably this Sunday, in the game against Fortuna. Regensburg's performance last Saturday was sobering. They suffered a 2-0 defeat against 1. FC Nürnberg. Düsseldorf won the last game against FC Erzgebirge Aue 3-1 and is 13th in the table with 26 points. In the first leg, both teams were content with a 1-1 draw.

Also read:

After 23 games played, SSV Jahn Regensburg's performance is average overall: nine wins, four draws and ten defeats. The past games were not crowned with success for the host. After all, it's been four games since the last win.

After 23 games, Fortuna Düsseldorf has seven wins, five draws and eleven defeats on the credit side.

Both teams are currently in the bottom half of the table. The SSV is in tenth place with 31 points, while Fortuna is in 13th place with five points fewer. The guest's body language was generally right, so the team has collected 47 yellow cards so far this season. Is Regensburg prepared for this?

The spectators can expect a balanced game between two equal teams - at least that's the case so far
