Senta Berger honored at the Braunschweig Film Festival

Braunschweig News Film Festival

Braunschweig (AP) - Actress Senta Berger was honored as a guest star at the international film festival in Braunschweig on Saturday. In the evening, the 81-year-old received "Die Europa", the main prize of the festival, which is endowed with 25,000 euros, in the big house of the city's state theatre. According to the organizers, the European Acting Prize is awarded for outstanding performances and services to European film culture.

With more than 100 film productions, legendary theater appearances and numerous television roles, Berger is one of the most successful representatives of German, European and international film, it was said in the tribute to the Austrian actress. In previous years, film greats such as Sebastian Koch and Mario Adorf had also been honored in Braunschweig.

The 36th edition of the festival, which ended on Sunday, featured almost 250 films with more than 50 premieres. With a total of 67,000 euros for ten festival prizes, a record sum was awarded in 2022. In view of the ongoing war against Ukraine, the organizers wanted to highlight the country's film culture and offer a platform for Ukrainian film festivals. Collaborations have emerged with the Odesa International Film Festival (OIFF) and the Kyiv International Short Film Festival (KISFF).

Another Marvel star: Chris Evans is the new "Sexiest Man Alive"

News Chris Evans

"The universe has spoken," is the headline of "People" magazine on the cover, which identifies US actor Chris Evans (41) as the new "Sexiest Man Alive". Evans is best known for his role as the selfless and self-sacrificing superhero Captain America in Marvel's multi-billion dollar Avengers franchise. His predecessor on the sexiness executive chair was also a Marvel star, but rather controversial: US actor Paul Rudd (53).

His mother will be proud, his friends will laugh
If you told a school-age Chris Evans that he would one day be named Sexiest Man Alive, he would have been "thrilled." The actor tells this in the cover story of the magazine. "That would probably be the route to the cool table I wasn't at." These days, however, the Boston native braces himself for all sorts of teasing from his friends.

Evans is sure that his mother will approve of the dazzling title unreservedly. "My mother will be so happy," he says. "She's proud of everything I do, but that's something she can really brag about," he adds. And indeed: "I'm not surprised at all," she is confidently quoted by the magazine. "Our family will be ecstatic."

Hard-working family man and dog fan
This year alone, Chris Evans has starred in Pixar's Lightyear, Netflix's Gray Man and directed three new films, including 2023's AppleTV+ Ghosted, which he is also producing. He is also still co-operator of A Starting Point, the civic engagement platform he launched in 2020.

He is also known on social media as the devoted, photo-loving dog dad of Dodger, his boxer mix. And he tries to spend as much time as possible at home and with his family in Boston. When he's offered roles, he now pays more attention to "where the film is being shot," he says. "I'm too old to live out of a suitcase for six months and I've settled into a nicer phase where I'm just happy to be home."

He's also thinking a lot more about his future outside of acting - one that includes marriage and fatherhood. "It's something I really want," says Chris Evans. Whether his fans will know when the time comes is unclear, however, because the actor also admits: "Some things you just want for yourself, or just for my family and friends."

Steven Spielberg Pandemic has 'thrown directors under the bus'

Steven Spielberg thinks filmmakers have been "thrown under the bus" by the coronavirus pandemic.

The 75-year-old director explained that while the COVID-19 pandemic has also allowed streaming platforms to thrive, filmmakers have had to "banish" some of their work to platforms like HBO Max.

Speaking to the New York Times newspaper, Spielberg revealed: "The coronavirus pandemic has presented streaming platforms with an opportunity to increase their subscriptions to record-breaking levels and has also thrown some of my best filmmaker friends under the bus because their films simply didn't come to the cinema anymore. They got paid and in that case the movies were suddenly relegated to HBO Max." The Jaws filmmaker added, "I think the older audience was relieved that they didn't have to step on sticky popcorn. But I really think that for that same older audience, once they've gone back to the movies, the magic of being in a social situation with a bunch of strangers is also a pick-me-up." In 2020, Warner Bros. had announced that all releases for 2021 would be made available on the streaming platform in order to be able to "guarantee" as much market attractiveness as possible.

Known from "Harry Potter": Leslie Phillips died at 98

British actor Leslie Phillips (1924-2022) is dead. After a long illness, Phillips died at the age of 98, as reported by the "BBC", among others. His agent said the longtime actor passed away peacefully on November 7th.

"I've lost a wonderful husband and the public has lost a truly great showman," Phillips' spouse Zara Carr was quoted as saying by The Sun tabloid. People would have loved him. Wherever he went, he was virtually surrounded. Carr and the actor have been married since 2013.

He was the Sorting Hat in the Harry Potter films
In his long career Phillips had appeared in countless film and series productions. He was already in front of the cameras in the 1930s and later became best known for the "Carry On" film series. Over the years, the Briton has appeared alongside numerous international stars, including Meryl Streep (73), Robert Redford (86) and Klaus Maria Brandauer (79) in "Beyond Africa".

He also played in "The Jackal" alongside Bruce Willis (67) and Richard Gere (73) and in "Lara Croft: Tomb Raider" alongside Angelina Jolie (47). However, Philipps is probably best known to many younger students for his voice. In the "Harry Potter" films he lent it to the Sorting Hat.
