LGBTQ character causes Saudi Arabia to ban new "Doctor Strange"

The introduction of the superhero America Chavez should be the reason why the long-awaited Marvel sequel is not allowed to be shown in the country's cinemas.

Saudi Arabia's film censorship has once again stopped a film from Marvel's universe. The Hollywood Reporter announces that "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness", which premieres in early May, will not be shown in cinemas in the country.

The ban will again have to do with the presence of an LGBTQ person in the film. "Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness" introduces the character America Chavez, played by Xochitl Gomez, who in the comic books has been confirmed to be a lesbian.

Even in some of Saudi Arabia's neighboring countries, it is starting to look like the audience will not get to see the long-awaited sequel. An official ban has not yet been confirmed, but it will no longer be possible to buy tickets for the film in Kuwait and Qatar.

Last year, the Marvel movie "Eternals" was also stopped from going to cinemas in several countries in the Middle East, partly because of its depiction of a same-sex love affair. Since then, big movies like Steven Spielberg's "West Side Story" have also been stopped in the region, due to its inclusion of a trans character, played by a non-binary actor.

Another Will Smith movie is scrapped

Netflix is quietly stopping its plans for a sequel to "Bright". However, it does not seem to be due to the Oscars scandal.

In recent weeks, Will Smith has seen several of his film projects paused or canceled, due to the slap in the face he handed out at the Oscars. And here comes another setback for the actor: the planned "Bright 2" will not happen.

David Ayers' "Bright" was the Netflix movie from 2017 that mixed cop action with a fantasy world inhabited by orcs. The streaming service announced its plans for a continuation already four years ago. Two years ago, they gave the directing job to Louis Leterrier.

Now, however, they have come up with other ideas. Bloomberg journalist Lucas Shaw wrote on Twitter that "Netflix has abandoned its plans for a sequel" but also adds that "it is unrelated to the event".

In other words, Netflix may have quietly scrapped "Bright 2" even before the Oscars, as far as we know. No major loss for Netflix viewers, I'm sure.

For Smith, on the other hand, it is another job less. In recent weeks, both "Bad Boys 4" and the Netflix thriller "Fast and Loose" have ended up in the firing line. Whether the actor's career after The Slap can recover remains to be seen.

Box Office USA: "Sonic 2" breaks opening record for video game adaptation

Paramount Pictures' streak in US cinemas is in full swing. The studio seems to gain momentum with each new title. "Sonic 2. Fast as lightning" won a sensational 71 million dollars for good morning. This amount is much higher than predicted before the weekend. And the best Paramount movie start since 2014 and "Transformers: Age of Extinction".

"Sonic 2" broke the same opening record for a video game adaptation. The previous one belonged to the first part of "Sonic" and amounted to 58 million dollars. The movie hit theaters just before the pandemic started, so its combined revenue ($ 149 million) does not reflect the franchise's true potential. The second movie should beat this result without any problems. The more so because it has fantastic ratings (A in CinemaScore).

After three days, "Sonic 2. Fast As Lightning" is Paramount's second highest-grossing title this year. It only needs $ 10 million to overcome The Scream.

A completely different mood prevails at Universal Pictures' headquarters. Michael Bay's "ambulance" was lost in theaters. Already in the forecasts no success was foretold. However, the actual result is much worse. Instead of $ 12 million, "Ambulance" won just $ 8.7 million.

Why such a bad result? Perhaps because the film is to be broadcasted just 17 days after its cinematic premiere. So the viewers have no incentive to go to the cinema, as soon as they see it comfortably at home.

However, "Ambulance" has a chance for small drops. Those viewers who decided to watch it gave it in CinemaScore A-.

"Morbius" is doing terrible. During the second weekend, the comic book show lost as much as 74% of its proceeds. So in total, it is only $ 57 million. The chance for a hundred million from American cinemas is nowhere to be seen.

On the other hand, "Everything everywhere at once" becomes one of the biggest box office hits of the A24 studio. After the distribution expanded to 1,212 theaters, revenues from a million dollars a week ago jumped to six million. In total, he has $ 8.4 million in his account.

Already on Wednesday, the film "Father Stu" about a boxer who became a priest, directed mainly to Christian audiences, will hit theaters. He starred in Mark Wahlberg and is accompanied on-screen by Mel Gibson. On Friday, the fairy-tale spectacle "Fantastic Beasts: Dumbledore's Secrets" will appear. The film debuted in the world last week and after five days it has at least 58 million dollars to its credit.

"Dungeons & Dragons" with full title and new release date

Fantasy show inspired by the game "Dungeons & Dragons" received its official title. Posts distributed via social media channels from Paramount Pictures reported that the full name of the project was "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves." The official release date has also been revealed - the film will be shown on the screens on March 3, 2023.

"Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" - what is known about the project?

The creators of "Dungeons & Dragons" do not share any details about the show inspired by the most popular role-playing game in the world. So far, we only got information about the next engagements. The film will star: Chris Pine, Michelle Rodriguez, Justice Smith, Regé-Jean Page, Sophia Lillis, Chloe Coleman, Daisy Head and Hugh Grant. We'll probably get more information in the coming weeks - the disclosure of the title and release date is a clear declaration that the film's promotional campaign is about to begin.

When asked in interviews about the atmosphere of the movie "D&D", Pine described the project as a combination of "Game of Thrones", "Bride for the Prince" and "Monty Python and the Holy Grail" with an admixture of "Goonies".

Behind the camera of "Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves" will be Jonathan Goldstein and John Francis Daley, writers of "Spider-Man: Homecoming" and directors of "Game Night".

"Dungeons & Dragons" is a 45-year-old RPG. In the early 1980s, it was extremely popular and caused anxiety in conservative American circles, becoming (apart from heavy-metal music) the cause of the so-called the Satanic Panic that engulfed the United States. In 2014, the fifth edition debuted, which made the game currently enjoying the greatest popularity in its history.

Below is a clip revealing the title of the show:

Reports: Filming with Bill Murray suspended over complaint

Los Angeles (AP) - According to media reports, filming with the US actor has been suspended due to a complaint against Bill Murray.

As several US newspapers unanimously reported, citing internal letters and unnamed sources, the production of “Being Mortal” had been stopped for the time being. The complaint about Murray for "inappropriate behavior" was learned last week, the New York Times quoted from a letter from the production company.

"After examining the circumstances, it was decided that production cannot continue at this time," it said. It was initially unclear what the allegations against Murray were about. It should be decided in the coming days together with director Aziz Ansari, among others, whether work on the film will continue.
